Monday is for Mothers: Sarah M. Matthews (1832 - After 1910)

I've already shared a photo of my maternal great great grandmother in the double portrait of her and her husband George W Slater that I included in one of my Working on Wednesday posts. We're lucky to have other pictures of her, all from the collection of Olive Kennedy.

Sarah M. Matthews was born in Christian County, Illinois in 1832, the daughter of Eli Matthews and Susan Hanon. And that's where she married my great great grandfather in 1851. You can follow their life together at his link above.

Sarah survived her husband's death in Greenwood County, Kansas, in 1899 and appears in both the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses. She's also listed in the 1905 Kansas State Census.

After that we have no records that tell us how much longer she lived, where she died and where she is buried, although I think it's likely her grave is near George's in Twin Grove Cemetery in Severy, Kansas.
