If you are like me and don't know precisely what half of those terms are in all those legal and court documents we use in American genealogy (probate? bequest? codicil? say what?), then Black's Law Dictionary is the go-to source:
- Black's Law Dictionary 1st (1891) and 2nd (1910) editions
- The Law Dictionary: Featuring Black's Law Dictionary Free Online Legal Dictionary 2nd Ed.
- Read it online! A law dictionary : containing definitions of the terms and phrases of American and English jurisprudence, ancient and modern, and including the principal terms of international, constitutional, ecclesiastical and commercial law, and medical jurisprudence, with a collection of legal maxims, numberous select titles from the Roman, modern civil, Scotch, French, Spanish, and Mexican law, and other foreign systems, and a table of abbreviations (1910)
My understanding is that it is best to use the edition closest to the time you are researching.
