William Coale Junior and Elizabeth Sparrow Get Married in 1689

Last week I posted the 1730 marriage record for a pair of maternal 6X great grandparents, Margaret Coale and Richard Richardson. Now I'm going back another generation to Margaret's parents William Cole Junior and Elizabeth Sparrow.

As promised, here's the 1753 will of my 5X great grandmother Tabitha Pace's husband John Moore (beginning at the bottom of the first page):

It's clear from his will that John Moore owned a considerable amount of land which he divided between three of his six sons, including my direct ancestor William. The other sons had to be content with 50 Pounds of Virginia money and a slave. In all, John mentions twelve enslaved persons which he distributed among his children while reserving three to his "Loving Wife."* His daughter Sarah, apparently unmarried at the time, was to receive a feather bed and "one Negro Girl named Lucy".

Since it's the "Plantation" that Tabitha was given a life tenancy I wish I could decipher the clerk's handwriting describing the land left to Richard Moore. Maybe you can do better?

The Thomas Pace named as one of the executors along with Tabitha and son Richard is almost certainly her brother who can be found in later North Carolina census records.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any further probate documents online--I was hoping for an inventory which would enable us to have a better idea of the material circumstances of John and Tabitha.



*There were five men--Jack, Cofar, James, Cobb and Peter; two women--Mall and Hanner; three boys--Matt, David and Daniel; and two girls--Lotte and Lucy.

From the Probate Files: Jeremiah Warren's Estate - More To Be Learned

If you've been following my posts about my third great uncle Jeremiah Warren will and probate, you may recall the final appraisal and proposed division of some of his enslaved people took place in 1837 and included a share for his nephew (and my great great grandfather) Jesse T.S. Warren, as the only heir of Jeremiah's brother Jesse. Edmund and Amy were allotted to  Jesse T.S. although I wasn't able to find out from available records when the division took place.

Jesse T.S. only 7 at the time of Jeremiah's death, so during his minority his property was administered by his step-father and guardian John P. Phillips who was required to file annual reports to the local Probate Court in Troup County (where they had moved around 1833).  The guardian's account for 1839 recorded on April 21, 1840, tells us more about Edmund and Amy's fates.

Benjamin Harper was a resident of Hancock County so Edmund wasn't sold far away but Amy's new owner Jesse Peacock lived in Wilkinson County which is about 40 miles away so she would have been separated from her three surviving children.*

*The inventory of Jeremiah's estate listed Amy with four children: Matt (left to Jesse T.S.--we'll learn more about him next week), Caroline (part of William Warren's share), Joby and Mason. From the annual accounts filed by the executors we know that one of Amy children died in 1836-37 but it's not clear whether it was Joby or Mason.

Five years to the day after the death of Jeremiah Warren, a Commission appointed by the Court met to determine the value* of the enslaved persons belonging to the estate along with the cash (notes) in the estate's account.and to work out a fair division of this property.

The foregoing entry in the Probate Court's records is the last one I've been able to find for Jeremiah Warren's estate either in the general index or by paging through other online records at FamilySearch so we don't know when the actual division took place.

This time John Graybill and Jesse G. Butts, the executors of my fourth great uncle Jeremiah Warren's estate in Hancock County, Georgia. filed a report covering two years.

From this account we learn that one of Amy's children died sometime during the period covered and that Lethe had a child. Old (crazy) Tom was still hanging on. The best explanation I can think of for the "small girl" being maintained by John Graybill and Jesse G. Butts is that one of the enslaved women (either Mary or Pat) living on the plantation Jeremiah set aside for the seven persons he hoped to have legally freed had a baby and this was the means of accounting for it. I'm hoping we'll find out more in subsequent probate records.

As to the people hiring the slaves belonging to the estate, most are familiar names but there are several new ones: Ingram Bass and Robert Petigrew. These two men, both born about 1812, were also residents of Hancock County.

Jack, Anderson, Hal, Meredith, Edmund, Lethe and Amy and her children remained with the same people who had hired them the previous year. Lucy was transferred from Robert to Mary Warren, Abram to David Amos, and Dave was hired jointly by the Wilcoxens. I had considered the possibility that Tom's non-appearance on last year's list meant that he had died, but William Warren is credited with providing his food and clothing for the past three years.

*This is Edmund, hired out to P[eter] Equals again this year. Peter was a relatively rare given name and when I decided to try to figure out who the Wilcoxens were, using census records from 1840 for Hancock County I think I figured out what his "real" name was: Peter Echols. Here's the page from the census--note how many of the people on it are familiar to us from these probate records. (Polley Warren is Jeremiah's deaf sister Mary Warren)

Georgia Hancock County
     Know all men by these presents that we the undersigned
legatees of Jeremiah Warren later of said County dec'd. in conseque-
ence of the recent failure of Messrs. A Slaughter & C Labuzan who
were indebted to said dec'd. at the time of his death to the amount
of seventeen hundred dollars and upwards, the claim upon them
due the estate of said Warren being in jeopardy we authorise
and consent that the Executors shall adapt such measures as
they may deem expedient to secure said debt or any part of it
by compromise or otherwise other than a suit at Law for the
recovery of the money and we do hereby acquit & forever bare harmless
the said Exrs. from any liability on account of the above nam-
ed debt this 5th March 1834                          Lott Harton
