Animal Encounters: Navajo Lamb, 1953

As I've shared in several previous posts*, in 1953 we drove up into the highlands of the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Here's a picture of me in the corral of one of the hogans we visited hugging a very cute lamb.

*The first photo in this post shows Mother and me with the Navajo family whose relatives we were visiting and this weaver is the man's sister.

Animal Encounters: Pigs!

The notes for this undated snapshot state that this is "Opal* posing w/pigs Severy."

[Courtesy of Olive Slater-Kennedy]

Opal appeared in the 1910 U.S. Census as a resident of Kansas and in 1911 she was listed in the Boulder, Colorado, city directory living with her mother Rufina which gives us a cut-off date for the photo.

*Opal May Slater (1890-1973) is my grandfather Harry Alan Slater's sister and therefore my great-aunt.

Monday Is for Mothers AND Animal Encounter: Squirrel!

According to Dad's notes these photos of Mother feeding a squirrel were taken in October of 1948 in Richardson's Grove State Park in the California redwoods.

Animal Encounters: Deer! (1951)

While Mother was bravely feeding the doe, I wasn't willing to extend a hand toward her fawn (even though it clearly didn't have feathers and wasn't about to fly up and peck at me as Billy Bones had done).

Animal Encounters: Penguin! (1950)

This picture, taken year after last week's photo which documented my persecution by a banty rooster named Billy Bones, shows that I had learned from experience to keep my hands out of reach of suspect avians.

That year we traveled to Oregon and Washington but there's no indication of which beach this is.

Animal Encounters: Chicken! (1950)

I was shocked when I recently found this slide taken in 1949 when I was 2-1/2. In my memories that banty rooster (named Billy Bones) was HUGE.

Billy hated me and attacked every opportunity that he got. Mother would pen him up but if Grandpa Currey, who lived next door, saw him in the cage he would let Billy out again because he felt sorry for the bird.

Too bad I only had a cap gun!
