In the Spring of 2005 Bonnie and I drove through the Vicksburg National Military Park. Unfortunately it wasn't until several years later that I became aware that Dick Worden, one of my maternal great great grandfathers, had served in the 24th Iowa Infantry during the attack on the strongly defended city. The USS Cairo Gunboat (the history of which you can read about here) is on display near the north end of the park.

If I'd known I could have sought out the marker for his regiment and taken my own photo of it.
