i4gg Conference is February 2 & 3

Wow, I haven't posted for about six months!  Since last June my husband retired, a beloved cat died, and I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer (complete with lumpectomy, radiation, and tamoxifen).

I've worked on my tree almost every day, but didn't put aside any time to do blog posts until things had settled down.

I've also been keeping an eye on the DNA Doe Project (also Wikipedia article "DNA Doe Project"):

DNA Doe Project (AKA DNA Doe Project, Inc. or DDP) is an American non-profit volunteer organization formed to identify unidentified deceased persons (commonly known as John Doe or Jane Doe) using forensic genealogy. Volunteers identify victims of automobile accidents, homicide, and unusual circumstances, and persons who committed suicide under an alias.[1] The group was founded in 2017 by Colleen Fitzpatrick and Margaret Press.

I love being able to see all the cases being solved!

Some of the people who are involved in this are almost certainly at the Institute for Genetic Genealogy (i4gg) conference.

I don't know the details behind the change in time and venue of this conference (it used to be in San Diego in December and now it is in Las Vegas in February), but fortunately for those of us who can't be there in person they have the option to purchase the videos of the sessions.  The videos have historically come out a number of months after the conference, so my guess is they will be available by the summer.

2018 i4GG registration Now Open!
Just since our last conference the popularity and public interest in Genetic Genealogy has seen a formidable explosion. Data bases have mushroomed as Genetic Genealogy has gone from exclusive or elite, to mainstream. This begs the question; what will the next 12 months hold for Genetic Genealogy? How are the testing companies preparing for continued explosive growth? How can we stay on top of the latest advancements in this field, including the most comprehensive and most effective  techniques for the successful application of DNA testing to genealogy available now? This and so much more will be the theme of i4GG 2018.

Hosted by CeCe Moore’s DNA Detectives the i4GG 2.5 day Genetic Genealogy conference will kick off with a “company” day Friday December 7 when the major DNA testing companies will own the stage. This is followed by two full days December 8 and 9, 2018 in San Diego CA. As is i4GG tradition, the conference will cover the most cutting edge Genetic Genealogy methodologies for any genealogy application, including unknown parentage.

The talks at i4GG will be professionally video recorded and be provided free of charge to those who purchase tickets for both (2.5) days. For those who opt for one day only, the recordings will be available for purchase at $99 for all videos, or $10 for purchase of individual video recordings.

Newbie or Pro, makes no difference, at i4GG there is something for everyone. i4GG has been called “the most important DNA conference in America” and we will strive to live up to this esteemed repute.

One of my goals this year is to learn more about DNA, obviously.  But another goal is to be as comfortable as possible (I find all-day meetings like this physically excruciating, despite my interest in the subject).

Videos of the Lectures from the 2017 i4gg Conference Are Now Up!

From the i4gg website.  You can click here to see CeCe Moore's keynote speech; all of the lectures are available for purchase at the i4gg site.

If you were an attendee to the 2-day conference you can view the lectures for free.  If you didn't attend you can still view the lectures ($10/lecture, or $99 for all 21 lectures).  Whatever your level of skill in genetic genealogy, you are sure to learn something new from these amazing experts.

I have been looking forward to re-watching Angie Bush's lecture, "Power Tools for the Genetic Genealogist":

There are many tools and resources that can be used to help break-through genealogical brick walls or recent unknown parentage cases. This lecture will focus on the methodologies, testing company tools, 3rd party tools and other techniques used by the professional genealogists at Ancestry ProGenealogists to work through these difficult brick walls.

This was an insightful look at how professionals put together a report which includes DNA results (especially useful for adoptees).  After my failure to get started on GenomeMate last year, I think the information in this lecture will help me process, sort, and organize my ever-accruing DNA cousin matches.

First Day of i4GG 2017

Time got away from me tonight, but I will post a summary of some of the great stuff I learned at the conference today.  While I have spent most of my time on correcting locations on my own tree this year, it looks like a lot of new tools have come up.

Also, I didn't realize that AncestryDNA sold 1.5 DNA kits this Black Friday/Cyber Monday.  WOW.  A few years ago that was the size of the whole AncestyDNA database.
