Sunday Drive: Casa del Herrero - Montecito, California - 2007

George Fox Steedman of St. Louis chose well in 1922 when he hired architect George Washington Smith to design his family's vacation home in Montecito. He also selected landscape architects  Ralph T. Stevens and Lockwood de Forest, Jr. to assist in making the entire 11-acre estate the Spanish Colonial Revival masterpiece it is.

Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2009, Casa del Herrero is open for public tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays (reservations required).

I first learned about Casa del Herrero from Elizabeth McMillan's book California Colonial so when Bonnie and I started planning a trip to Santa Barbara in 2007 a visit there was a top priority. And we weren't disappointed.
